Earthquake Strikes West Sumatra

Padang: earthquake strikes economy, putting 200,000 jobs at risk

On the afternoon of September 30, 2009, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake stuck West Sumatra, 

killing more than 1,000 people, injuring many thousands more and leaving tens of thousands 

homeless.  The quake was followed by a 6.6  magnitude aftershock 16 hours later.  While the 

quake caused damage within a 200 mile radius, the epicenter was offshore, about 35 miles 

from Pariaman.  More tens of thousands of  homes were destroyed as well as hospitals,

 schools, and places of worship.

 

Friends of Pariaman is responding the overwhelming need in the region by expanding

Friends of Pariaman was established in 2008 to provide economic assistance to residents of Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra, Indonesia and the surrounding communities.  Our activities are intended to promote access to education for elementary school aged children by providing direct grants to support the purchase of uniforms and school supplies as well as start up entrepreneurial capital in the form of microloans to assist mothers in establishing small home-based businesses in order to enable their families to become sustainably self sufficient.

Friends of Pariaman's administrative expenses are funded privately, enabling 100% of gifts received to be spent directly on charitable grants and micro-loan fund principal.  Friends of Pariaman is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization and all gifts are fully tax deductible for income tax purposes as permitted by law.
